Making sense of property taxes

You've received your 2016 property tax notice (based on market value as at July 1, 2015), but you aren't entirely sure what you're paying for. If you own or lease a property or manufactured home in British Columbia, you must pay annual property taxes for each property. The money raised from property taxes is used to fund local programs and services including:
  • Hospitals
  • Schools (for more information on the school tax works, click here)
  • Libraries
  • Parks
  • Recreation and community centres
  • Garbage services
  • Raod construction and maintenance
  • Emergency rescue services
  • Police and fire protection

Your property assessment significantly influences the amount of property taxes you have to pay. For more information about how BC Assessment assesses properties, click here.
